VK7/SC-002 Collins Bonnet Activation – 4/10/14

Drive up the Brooker Hwy out of Hobart toward Launceston and turn off left to Berridale and Collinsvale. Head to and through Collinsvale and turn off left to the Myrtle Forest walk (sign posted). Head along the road and park in the Myrtle Forest walk car park.

Walk for 15m along the forestry road to the picnic area. Then it is a steady climb for 15m to the Water Fall. From the water fall it is a reasonably steep climb for about 20m to the turnoff to Collins Bonnet and Collins Cap. Turn left to Collins Bonnet and head up through the rain forest and then through Eucalypt forest.

This part of the track is overgrown and you need to push your way through the vegetation – long sleeves and pants are essential! About 1 hour later you come out on the East-West Fire Trail and a few minutes further on is the only shelter/hut in this region. Son Reuben and I had lunch here. About 5m up the fire trail is the track off to the right to Collins Bonnet. The summit is another 30m reasonably steep climb and rock hopping most of the way.

There is a trig point and open operating area on summit. We setup the Squid pole in the middle of a rock cairn and I operated next to the cairn. We even found a geocache on summit!

Spectacular Views from the summit.

I made 18 x 40m, 5 x 20m and 7 x 2m contacts on summit.

Thanks to all amateurs who made contact with me.

The weather along with the views were spectacular and the wind held off. We made our way back down which took about 2 hours back to the car.

Another successful activation in VK7.
